In particular the invention is directed to the detection of electromagnetic interference (EMI) signals from electrical devices, such as mobile telephones and pagers, and to the analysis of EMI signals for various purposes, such as to estimate the operating condition of a device from which the EMI signal emanates. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) can have undesirable effects on the operation of consumer products. EMI test and analysis equipment is commonly used to detect and characterise EMI signals to assist in the design and development of consumer products. There are many different tests and analysis techniques available, depending on the nature of the EMI signals to be analysed. For example, in the area of consumer electronics, EMI analyses may focus on the effects of EMI on the various functions of a consumer product, such as the operation of a television set or radio receiver or the display of a mobile telephone. Examples of such tests are disclosed in International Patent Application No. WO 93/25019, WO 93/25011 and EP-A-0 448 112. Other examples of EMI tests may focus on the effect of EMI on components of a product, for example the capacitors of a radio receiver, or more generally on the performance of the product as a whole. Examples of such tests are disclosed in International Patent Application No. WO 92/16491, EP-A-0 442 225 and EP-A-0 507 099. Still other examples of EMI tests may focus on the effects of EMI on the performance of components of the product. Examples of such tests are disclosed in International Patent Application No. WO 95/20254 and WO 96/03180. Analysis of EMI signals is usually performed by analysing the EMI signal in real time.
